Lahore Waste Management Company

The City District Government Lahore (CDGL) established Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) under section 42 of the Companies Ordinance 1984 on 19th March 2010. The major task of LWMC is to provide a waste management program that contributes to maintain the health of the residents by ensuring that waste is removed from the city and disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner through efficient waste collection, storage, transportation and disposal. The vision of LMWC is:
“Transformation of Lahore as one of the cleanest cities in the world by providing customized solutions in consultation with citizens and private partners to ensure sustainable, safe, clean and green environment”

Achievments

The achievements of Lahore Waste Management Company are:

  • The waste collection efficiency was about 62% at the time of establishment of company and steadily increased which has now reached to more than 90%
  • Before LWMC there was no proper mechanical washing and sweeping mechanism defined in the city and now LWMC is mechanically washing and sweeping the roads through imported vehicles
  • The major intervention of LWMC with respect to its waste disposal strategy is to establish the first sanitary landfill site in Lahore
  • LWMC has established a communication and awareness department which continuously engages the general public, media and educational institutions to effectively propagate activities of LWMC
  • The LWMC aims at utilizing the available municipal solid waste for generating energy. Therefore a biogas plant is established in Icchogill that is completed and will be operational soon. Furthermore an international consultant is also hired for waste to energy project
  • LWMC is also striving to establish a Health Care Waste (HCW) disposal facility for proper disposal of risk waste. In this context a detailed implementation plan is prepared for proper collection, transportation, storage and disposal of HCW disposal
  • The task of designing new SWM system for outsourcing in six other cities of  Punjab; Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi (Murree), Sialkot, Multan and Bhawalpur was entrusted to LWMC because of its experience in Lahore. LWMC has signed consultancy agreement with these cities and is in the process of preparation of SWM Model plans and documents to be implemented
  • LWMC is elected to prepare solid waste management reports in order to provide technical assistance to the Government of Balochistan and fort Munro (DG Khan)
  • In order to improve the performance of LWMC and customer satisfaction, the LWMC has started state of the art information technology based tools to monitor the progress of contractors and customer satisfaction. The tools are:
    • Video wall establishment
    • Complaint Re-dressal System (CRS)
    • Vehicle Tracking and Monitoring System (VTMS)
    • Vehicle Trip Counting System (VTCS)
